HDA Statement on New Report from President's Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis

November 1, 2017

Following the new report released by the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis, Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) President and CEO John M. Gray released the following statement.

“We commend the Commission for its work over the past several months to identify comprehensive solutions to address the opioid epidemic. Our industry is strongly committed to working with the public and private sectors to advance meaningful reforms at both the state and federal levels to reduce the prevalence of overprescribing; increase awareness of proper use and disposal of opioids among patients and families; and ensure individuals with legitimate pain needs have access to safe and effective treatments.

“In our letter to the Commission, we outlined the proactive solutions that would strengthen our country’s response to this epidemic. We were encouraged to see the Commission call for urgent action on a number of these policies, including:

  • Improvements to data-sharing among public and private sectors via state prescription drug monitoring programs;
  • Updated regulations to facilitate the greater use of securely designed electronic prescribing protocols for controlled substances, including opioids;
  • Expanded coverage of alternative pain treatments, as well as greater access to naloxone in emergency situations; and,
  • Improved patient education on safe use of pain treatments and on the options for disposing of unwanted medicines.

“The recommendations from the Commission, coupled with those of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released this summer, provide a strong blueprint for how we can comprehensively address the epidemic moving forward.”
